Alcohol Unit Calculator

Track alcohol intake and monitor safe consumption levels.

Calculate Alcohol Units

Introduction

Understanding alcohol units can help you track your consumption and stay within recommended guidelines for safe drinking. This calculator allows you to easily determine the number of units in any alcoholic beverage based on its strength (ABV) and volume, promoting responsible drinking habits.

How Our Alcohol Unit Calculator Can Help You

Different drinks have vastly different alcohol contents. A pint of strong craft beer can have more than double the alcohol of a standard lager. This calculator helps you see the true alcohol content of what you're drinking, moving beyond just counting "drinks." It promotes mindfulness about your consumption, helping you make informed choices to stay within safe limits. It's an essential tool for anyone looking to moderate their drinking, track their intake accurately, or simply be more aware of their habits.

How It Works

The calculator uses the standard formula for alcohol units: (Volume in ml × ABV %) ÷ 1000 = Units. You simply enter the size of your drink in milliliters (ml) and its Alcohol By Volume (ABV), which is always printed on the label. The calculator instantly does the math and tells you the exact number of units in that single drink. This simple calculation demystifies alcohol content and makes tracking easy.

FAQs About Our Alcohol Unit Calculator

What are the recommended weekly limits?

Many health authorities, like the UK's NHS, recommend no more than 14 units per week for both men and women, spread over several days with some alcohol-free days.

How many units are in a standard drink?

This varies greatly! A medium (175ml) glass of 13% wine is about 2.3 units. A pint (568ml) of 4% lager is also 2.3 units. A pint of 7% craft IPA, however, is 4 units. This is why a calculator is so useful.

Does this calculator work for spirits?

Yes. A single 25ml shot of 40% spirit is exactly 1 unit. A double (50ml) would be 2 units.

Why is tracking units important?

Regularly exceeding the recommended limits is linked to a higher risk of long-term health problems, including liver disease, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
